I laughed with the best of them, and cried with the worst of them. The last episode nearly had me catatonic on the floor, I couldn’t stop sobbing all throughout the entire hour. This drama was perfect to marathon because it’s zany, zippy, so adorably sweet it gave me a toothache that worsened with each episode, but inflicted a pain upon me that felt oh-so-good. It’s been weeks since I finished wiping away my tears of joy at Mi Ho and Dae Woong’s happy ending, but I still remember the drama with a boatload of fondness and judging by the sheer number of screencaps I took while watching this sucker (700 of them! I still can’t believe it.), My Girlfriend is a Gumiho has earned a place on my list of top ten favorite feel-good dramas. I’ll be continuing this review after the jump for those of y’all who haven’t seen it yet (What are you waiting for?!). And just a warning, I’m including MAJOR picspam because of the ridiculous number of screencaps I took, mostly of Shin Min Ah‘s Gu Mi Ho because I developed a major girl-crush on the character. What?
But after the initial excitement wore off, I thought about it some more and I dunno if I can actually picture this pairing together. Shin Min Ah so obviously looks older than Lee Seung Gi that it’ll be a bit awkward, and SMA is drop dead gorgeous, but I can’t picture her as a gumiho as of now. For me, her strongest contender was Jeon Ji Hyun who I thought fit the role to a T, but I absolutely adore Shin Min Ah so I’m excited to see her in this.
After all the hoopla with the casting for this drama though, my anticipation for it has dissipated somewhat, but I’m hoping the Hong sisters will succeed in this new foray into another type of drama instead of just slapstick. For the most part, Hong Gil Dong was a success although it veered off into too much angst sometimes (or so I’ve heard), so I’m going to be cautiously optimistic about their attempt in dabbling with comedy mixed with horror. (Although I really hope there won’t be gore. I don’t do gore. Gore and Soluna do not mix in the slightest, and it will not bode well for me continuing to watch it in the future despite my love for both the leads.)
Much to my disappointment, Lee Seung Gi‘s gumiho in the Hong sisters’ upcoming drama My Girlfriend is a Gumiho will be none other than 19-year-old actress Shin Se Kyung. I’m not gonna lie… I can’t say that I’m psyched about this piece of news ‘cuz I was rooting for Jeon Ji Hyun, but it probably would be a better choice for her to choose the drama Runaway (costarring singer/actor Bi) if she does wind up choosing that as her television drama comeback. I’ve only watched Shin Se Kyung in one of her previous movies (The Five Senses of Eros), and with that being an omnibus project with tons of seasoned actors on its cast, I didn’t pay much attention to her so I’m not sure how she’ll fare. I’ll just be cautiously anticipating this drama due to my affection for Lee Seung Gi and my general enjoyment of the previous dramas that the Hong sisters wrote. How do y’all feel about this casting?
The female lead for the upcoming drama My Girlfriend is a Gumiho has not been cast yet, although actress Shin Se Kyung and singer/actress Sandara Park have been contenders for a while. Another name has been added to the mix as a candidate for this drama to be written by the Hong sisters, and that’s Jeon Ji Hyun. This news excites me because I’ve liked Jeon Ji Hyun in what I’ve seen her in (although I haven’t seen her in much), and I could see this pair working for some reason. Although Jeon Ji Hyun is drop dead gorgeous, she seems to work well with the clumsy, goofy type of guy seeing how much chemistry she had with Cha Tae Hyun in the movie My Sassy Girl, and so I think she and Lee Seung Gi would hit it off, although they’d be quite the unconventional, unexpected couple. This isn’t a sure thing though because she’s also considering taking the female lead role in Bi’s comeback drama Runaway, so I’m sure a decision will be made soon and announced in due time.
I had been hoping all this time that they’d consider Moon Chae Won for the role because I think she’s a great actress for someone so young, and she’s beautiful so she’d fit the goddessy type of role that the gumiho is known for, but since her name hasn’t been brought up in the running for the female lead role, I’m throwing my vote in for Jeon Ji Hyun because I’d prefer her over the other two contenders. What do y’all think?
